  2. What is Industrialization? • Industrialization- The process by which a nation begins to develop large industries. • New industries led to new technologies • We changed from a farming nation to one based on industry • Because of these changes people left the rural areas and moved to the cities

  3. Why did people move to the cities? • Describing wheel activity • Urbanization- growth of the city • One large group of citizens moved to the North, the African Americans • Called the “Great Migration” • African American Migration Activity

  4. Two Major Changes • Two major changes occurred during this time period • 1) New technologies (later on we will learn all the new technologies) • 2) Cultural Advances- • Parks • Theaters • Museums • Art and Music Expanded

  5. Andrew Carnegie -Built a steel mill near Pittsburgh He had complete control over the steel industry He produced almost all of the countries steel Became very wealthy, yet he was very generous with his money

  6. John D. Rockefeller -He controlled most of the oil industry in the U.S. Helped create the Standard Oil Company He paid very close attention to every detail of his business Traveled from Cleveland to Titusville, PA where oil was found

  7. J.P. Morgan American banker Dominated the financial world

  8. Henry Ford Experimented with gas powered engines created the assembly line
