  2. Ethos • References the Declaration of Independence “four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated t the proposition that all men are created equal.” • This says that he strongly beliefs in equality

  3. Pathos • “ That we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain” • Most of the mothers and wives of the soldiers thought that they were dying for nothing this made them feel that the president felt their pain and that theirs sons and husbands hadn’t died for nothing

  4. The subject • The Subject is the dead soldiers that gave their lives to fighting for the Union • At times down plays his importance to bring attention back to the dead soldiers “the world will little note, nor long remember what we say here but it can never forget what they did here”

  5. Occasion • Dedication of the Soldiers National cemetery • “we have come to dedicate a portion of that field as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that this nation might live”

  6. Audience • The audience is the family members that showed up and the Soldiers that were there witnessing the dedication

  7. Purpose • To raise the moral of the troops after loosing so many troops and to make them realize that those losses were not in vain • “that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that this government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from this earth.” • Saying that the nation will endure and carry on after this horrible war is over

  8. Speaker • Abraham Lincoln • Born February 12 1809 • 16th president • Served during the Civil war (620,000 deaths) • Assassinated 1865 by John Wilkes Booth in Fords theater

  9. Tone • Mournful but at the same time encouraging • “It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us, that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion; that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain; that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that this government of the people, by the people, and for the people shall not perish from this earth”
