Unit 9: Geometry – 6th Grade Lesson 4: Circumference of a Circle
Vocabulary • radius – the distance from the center to any point on the circle, r. • diameter – The distance across the circle through its center, d. • circumference – The distance around a circle, C. • pi – The ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. To approximate pi, use 22/7 or 3.14. When the diameter or radius is a multiple of 7, it will be easier to use 22/7 for π.
Circumference of a circle • Formula for Circumference: C = π d or C = 2 π r • where π= pi d = diameter r = radius • Ex. Find the circumference of a circle with diameter of 8 feet. • C = πd • C = (3.14)(8) • C = 25.12 ft. • *Estimate to check: 3 x 8 = 24 8 ft.
Circumference of a circle Example • Ex. Find the circumference of a circle with a radius of 7 cm. • C = 2 π r • C = 2(22/7)7 • C = 44 cm. • *Estimate to check: 2(3)(7) = 42 7 cm
Group work The Barringer Meteor Crater has a diameter of about 1186 meters. Find the circumference of the crater to the nearest meter. • C = π d • C = 3.14(1186) • C = 3,724.04 = 3,724 m • Estimate: 3 x 1200 = 3600 m
