  2. Presentation Outline • 1.0 Introduction • 2.0 Service Information • 3.0 Safety • 4.0 Tools and Equipment • 5.0 Basic Maintenance • 6.0 Fluid Levels • 7.0 Tips

  3. 1.0 Introduction • There are many cars on the road today. To keep these cars running well they need to be maintained properly and regularly. There are some pretty basic tests which can be performed to see if your car is up to par.

  4. 2.0 Service Information • Service Manuals • Specialized Manuals • Schematics • Troubleshooting Charts • Technical Service Bulletins (TSB) • Manufacturer Hotlines

  5. Chilton Kelly Blue Book Edmonds.com Service manual

  6. 3.0 Safety • Fire Extinguisher and First aid kit should always be near by • Safety Glasses should be worn to protect your eyes • Safety stands should be used under the car to keep it stationary • Always set the parking brake • Have adequate ventilation • Disconnect the negative battery connection when doing electrical work • Keep tools properly maintained

  7. &4.0 Tools and Equipm(ent • Tire pressure gauge----30-45psi • Tread depth gauge- use penny • Safety stands or jack stands • Spark plug socket and wrench • Sparkplug gapper • Combination volt/ohmmeter-multi meter • Float-type anti-freeze tester • Clean rags • Scan Tool

  8. 5.0 Basic Maintenance • Air cleaner - Check for dirt and debris • PCV Valve (Positive Crankcase Ventilation Valve) Check to make sure that air can flow through • Battery - Check for corrosion on the posts and make sure that it has the proper voltage(12.6V) • Drive Belts - Check for proper tension and appropriate wear (Cracking, glazing, worn, dryrotted) • All fluids at proper level to maintain heat and lubrication

  9. 5.0 Basic Maintenance(cont.) • Hoses - Check upper and lower radiator hoses and the heater hoses. Make sure that they are not cracked or swollen • Tires - Check for proper inflation levels (correct P.S.I.) Make sure that the tire tread meets specifications • Ignition wires - Check to see if they are worn out or bare • Spark plugs - Take them out of the engine head to check them. Look to see if they have oil in them or if they are fouled out with carbon build up. Also check to make sure that it is properly gapped

  11. 6.0 Fluid Levels • Transmission Fluid - Automatic transmissions can be checked under the hood of the car. The level should be full and the color should be red. On a manual transmission you would have to check under the car on the transmission itself • Brake Fluid - It is located in the master cylinder and should be up to the fill line- • Oil - Check the level to make sure that it is full. Check the color to make sure that it isn’t dark brown. That is an indication that it is broken down or lost its viscosity

  12. 6.0 Fluid Levels(cont.) • Anti-freeze - Check the anti freeze protection level against freezing temperatures by using a float type tester. It should be at least -15 degrees • Power Steering Fluid(optional) Check to make sure that it is full so you don’t burn out the motor

  13. 7.0 Tips • Always check your car for these things BEFORE you make a road trip. • Keep a roadside emergency kit in the truck of your car. • Road flares, transmission fluid, oil, anti-freeze, windshield washer fluid, clean rags, a flashlight • Change oil every 3,000 -5,000 miles or every three months • A quick inspection of these items will ensure a safe trip and prevent simple accidents from happening
