  2. News Media • Many newspapers were originally founded to promote political propaganda, but after the Civil War, advertisements made them less partisan. The media in the US is a business trying to make money through getting readers, listeners, or viewers. • Negative Nature of the Media

  3. News Media • Common Links- 1. Associated Press-biggest news organization in the world. Same story all over the world 2. New York Times News Service-Smaller, but very influential group of reporters. Other newspapers follow their lead • TV Outlets-ABC, CBS, CNN, FOX, NBC- all share stories • Talk Radio-started with “Fireside Chats”

  4. News Media • Franklin D. Roosevelt was the first to be very effective with the radio. Now the President gets more coverage than all the rest of the government put together. Sometimes it is positive(FDR & JFK) other times it is negative (G. Ford-”WIN” button and Clinton, “Zippergate”) • Main Contribution of the Press-(4th branch) is that they perform a “watchdog,” role and limit what government can do.
