  2. Project Partners • Utah Coalition for Caregiver Support • Utah Hospice and Palliative Care Organization • University of Utah Disabilities Studies Class - Service Learning Students • Local Senior Centers, Assisted Living Facilities, Rehabilitations Centers, Libraries • Private professionals

  3. Project Focus • Create a Caregiver Awareness Month Event throughout the state of Utah. • To honor and recognize caregivers across the lifespan by creating pampering/educational events. • Engage student population related to caregiving and caregivers

  4. Bennion Center Community Service Learning • Overall Goals: • Get involved • Get students involved • Address critical issues • Put classroom learning to practical use • Impact community and world

  5. How Service Learning Works • Briefly: • Experience turns caring into action • Students provide needed services to individuals, schools, or other community agencies • Service experience related to the subject matter of the course • The course offers a method to assess learning derived from service – credit is given for SERVICE LEARNING and not the actual service provided • Opportunities to reflect on experiences – write in journal – talk with recipients and other students

Participating Facilities • AAA’s: Murray, Sandy, Taylorsville, Tenth East • Rehab Facilities: Health South, United CP, Life Care Bountiful • Libraries: Park City, Ogden, Provo • Assisted Living Facilities: Green Gables AL, Greenwood AL, Emerald Pointe AL, Sunrise Holladay AL, Garden Terrace AL, Legacy AL, • Many more expressed interest for next year’s event

  7. Issues • Communication • Time • Drop out • Cancellations • Connecting with and recruiting Hospice volunteers to provide pampering • Recruiting “champions” at local level out of the Salt Lake area

  8. Lessons Learned • Start earlier • Involve more people at the local level • More guidance for students • Develop curriculum based on current model and lessons learned • Incorporate more training • Recruit providers earlier in the process
