  2. Eduardo Difilippo, Dan Price, Ming Gu, others

  3. Erica Sherritze Expanded Multi-branch Asymmetric Bifurcations

  4. The Virtual Soldier ProjectUsing 3-Dimensional Models As A Front End For Knowledge       Gary T. Atkins Fisk University Mentor – Richard C. Ward Affiliation – Research Alliance in Math and Science August 9, 2004

  5. Purpose: Transform the way we view, study and interact with information about the human body • Focus on the human heart • Provide capability to diagnose battlefield injuries, specifically penetrating wounds to the heart

  6. Overview of Gary Atkin’s Project PURPOSE: • Provide support to DARPA Virtual Soldier Project GOALS: • Display a three-dimensional (3D) model of the human thorax using Visualization ToolKit (VTK) • Connect anatomy to Foundational Model of Anatomy (an anatomy ontology) using both Web site and Web services

  7. VTK Program Displays Surfaces of Organ Segments Displays each organ segment as it traverses that segment Emulates a bullet wound to the right ventricle Surfaces rendered using VTK Program obtained from Bill Lorensen, GE Global Research

  8. Anatomy Ontology • Defines terms used to describe and represent an area of knowledge • Used by people, databases, and applications that require domain information • Include computer-usable definitions of relationships between concepts

  9. Linking 3D Imagery to Ontology Use both FME Web site and Web services

  10. The Development of Sophisticated Cardiac Models for Use in the Virtual Soldier Project Sarah Wing Davidson College Richard Ward, Mentor

  11. Results of Web service data, plotted using Tcl/Tk Injury to left ventricle of the heart using model supplied by U. of Washington

  12. Summary • Students learned: • Visualization Concepts • Representations of Information in Ontologies • Practical programming in Java, Tcl/Tk and VTK • Integration of software components • Concepts that are applicable to real world • IT Industry • e-Commerce • Games development • Animation industry • Modeling and simulation
