  1. Aircraft Familiarization

  2. Lesson Objectives At the conclusion of this lesson you will… • Understand the basic components of an airframe • Be familiar with aircraft controls. • Be familiar with the cockpit

  3. Fuselage Wings Empennage Landing Gear Powerplant Airframe - General

  4. Houses Cockpit Seats Cargo Attachment Points Fuselage

  5. Lift Monoplane vs Biplane Flaps Ailerons Wings

  6. Empennage • Tail Section • Vertical Stabilizer • Rudder • Horizontal Stabilizer • Elevator • Stabilator

  7. Landing Gear • Supports aircraft on ground • Absorbs landing load • Struts • Tail Wheel (Conventional) vs Tricycle

  8. Landing Gear Fixed Gear Retractable Gear

  9. Landing Gear • Movement on Ground

  10. Powerplant • Engine • Converts chemical energy (fuel) into mechanical energy which turns the propeller. Lycoming 0-320 Engine

  11. Powerplant • Propeller • Converts mechanical energy into thrust. • Attached to engine by crankshaft. • Rotates clockwise, as seen from cockpit.

  12. Powerplant • Cowl • Ducts air over engine for cooling. • Makes airflow around engine as smooth as possible.

  13. Three Axis of Aircraft • Longitudinal Axis • Lateral Axis • Vertical Axis

  14. Aircraft Control • Roll Control - Movement about Longitudinal Axis - Controlled by Ailerons

  15. Aircraft Control • Pitch Control - Movement about Lateral Axis - Controlled by Elevator

  16. Aircraft Control • Yaw Control - Movement about Vertical Axis - Controlled by Rudder

  17. Cockpit Familiarization

  18. Glass Cockpit

  19. Glass Cockpit
