  1. FRACKING

  2. FRACKING A technology used to extract natural gas that lies within a shale rock formation thousands of feet beneath the earth’s surface.

  3. HOW IT WORKS • It involves pumping millions of gallons of water, sand, and over 900 toxic chemicals thousands of feet underground at high pressure to release tiny pockets of gas by literally breaking up the rock where the natural gas is trapped and flow easily out of the well. • http://www.regalenergy.com/technology.htm

  4. PICTURE of how it works

  5. WHERE PRACTICED • Mostly practiced in: (1)PENNISYLAVINIA (2) NEW YORK (3) MARYLAND (4) WEST VIRGINIA

  6. CONTRADICTION • In 2005, the Bush energy bill exempted companies from disclosing the chemicals used during hydraulic fracturing thus contradicting Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). However, the FRAC Act (Fracturing Responsibility and Awareness to Chemical Act) is intending to repeal this bill and require the natural gas industry to disclose the chemicals they use.

  7. ENVIRONMENTAL EFFCTS • Fracking fluid can cause earthquakes. • Causes groundwater pollution- Harmful substances injected in clean water putting millions of people at risk.

  8. ECONOMIC-BENEFITS • Generated royalty payments to property owners. • Provided tax revenues to the governments. • Generated much needed high paying American jobs. • Provide energy to homes.

  9. VIDEO • VIDEO: the truth about fracking http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NW_xJqPjE_I

  10. SUMMARY • Fracking is basically extracting natural gas. • Its mostly practiced in Pennsylvania. • Some economic benefits includes: job employment, providing tax revenues to the government, and providing energy. • Some environmental effects includes: Earthquakes, groundwater pollution and destruction to clean water.

  11. Brainstorming through a Quiz • What is Fracking? • Where is fracking mostly practiced in the U.S? • Which act wanted to repeal for the safe and drinking act which was made in 1974? • What are some environmental effects of fracking? • What are some economic-benefits of fracking? • In your own opinion, do you think Fracking is good or bad?
