What is a Fictitious Name? • For an individual, it is a name that does not include the surname of the individual or a name that suggests the existence of additional owners. • For partnership, it is a name that does not include the surname of any general partner or suggests the existence of additional owners. • The statement is public record. You do not need to list your phone number.

  3. Who Should File? • Person doing business for profit under a fictitious name (does not include surname in company name) • Statement must be filed in county of principal place of business, and may also be filed in other counties as long as the requirements of filing in the county of principal place of business have been met

  4. Requirements • File within 40 days of business start date. • Owner must sign. • Street address of principal place of business and county must be listed . • All owners and their residence address must be listed. • Filed copy of statement must be published once per week for 4 consecutive weeks in an adjudicated newspaper in L.A. County. • Publication must begin within 30 days of filing.

  5. Publication • State law requires that within the next 30 days of filing, the registrant must publish a statement in a newspaper of general circulation in the county in which the principal place of business is located once a week for 4 weeks.

  6. Fees • The first time fee for the Fictitious Business Name Statement is $26.00 for one business name and one registrant. • The renewal filing fee for the Fictitious Business Name Statement is $26.00 for one business and one registrant. • There is an additional fee of $5 for both first time and renewal filing for each additional business name and/or each additional registrant in excess of one.

  7. Renewals • A fictitious name statement expires 5 years from the date it is filed. • A renewal of a fictitious business name statement must be filed prior to the date of expiration if you intend to continue doing business under that name and if there are no changes from the original. • Fee of $26. • A Renewal does not require publication.
