  1. Do Now Explain how iodine diffuses through a membrane. Why does this happen?

  2. Rewards for Meeting Our Goals Personal Goal: 80 or better on the Regents • Cupcake Class Goal: Every student passes the Regents - Pizza Party

  3. Weekly Agenda • Monday – Osmosis Lab • Tuesday – Final Exam Reflection, Homeostasis • Wednesday – Body Systems • Thursday – Enzymes, Lab • Friday - Proteins

  4. Why are we reviewing labs? • The 4 state required labs make up 25% of the regents and are the hardest questions on the regents: • Making Connections • Diffusion/Osmosis • Beaks of Finches • Biodiversity

  5. Need extra help on a topic? • Come today at 3:00PM with individual questions in the lab room.

  6. Today’s Agenda • Do Now • Agenda • Osmosis Mini Lesson – Video and Questions • Activity 2 – Osmosis Lab • Activity 3 – Regents Questions • Whole Group Share Out • Castle Learning

  7. Diffusion Through a Membrane • http://highered.mcgraw-hill.com/sites/0072495855/student_view0/chapter2/animation__how_osmosis_works.html • Explain the process that is occurring in the diagram in the link.

  8. Diffusion Through a Membrane Explain the process that is occurring in the diagram in the link. • The water molecules move from an area of high concentration of water (lower solute) to an area of lower concentration of water (higher solute).

  9. Diffusion Through a Membrane • 1. Which way will diffusion (osmosis) occur? (Percents indicate concentration of water.) 97% 99%

  10. Diffusion Through a Membrane • Which way will diffusion (osmosis) occur? (Percents indicate concentration of water.) 97% 99%

  11. Diffusion Through a Membrane • Which way will diffusion of water (osmosis) occur? (Percents indicate concentration of solute.) 3% 1%

  12. Diffusion Through a Membrane • Which way will diffusion of water (osmosis) occur? (Percents indicate concentration of solute.) 3% 1%

  14. Diffusion Through a Membrane • What is happening here?

  15. Diffusion Through a Membrane • What is happening here? When salt water is placed on cells, the water diffuses out of the cells’ cytoplasm into the salt solution. (Water moves from a higher concentration – inside the cell – to a lower concentration – outside the cell.) If fresh water is placed on the cells again, the water will flow back into the cells (high to low concentration).

  16. Diffusion Through a Membrane • Why didn’t the cell walls shrink with the cytoplasm?

  17. Diffusion Through a Membrane • Why didn’t the cell walls shrink with the cytoplasm? • Cell walls are rigid – they provide support for plant cells.

  18. Activity 2 • Directions: Turn to the osmosis lab in your packet. Work in groups on the lab and answer the conclusion questions. If you finish early you may move onto the regents questions

  19. Activity 3 • Directions: In groups answer the regents questions that relate to the lab. If you finish early you may move onto the “osmosis/diffusion/making connections castle learning assignment”

  20. Exit Ticket • What topics would you like us to focus on for next weeks review lessons? • What are you doing to prepare for the Regents?
