OFLC/ACB A presentation by Andrew Blazevic
What is the OFLC/ACB? The Office of Film and Literature Classification was the name of a censorship organisation that is currently known as the Australian Classification Board. Formed in 1970, the Board has jurisdiction exclusively over the Commonwealth of Australia (sometimes excluding South Australia).
Regulation This organisation is regulated by the government. It’s parent agency is the Attorney-General’s department.
What do they do? They classify films, video games and publications for exhibition.
How do they protect the public? The Classification Board undertakes the role of giving advisory ratings to several forms of media throughout the country. Any such media that contains material that offends ‘against the standards of morality, decency and propriety generally accepted by reasonable adults to the extent that it should not be classified is refused classification’ (banned).
How much power do they have? The Classification Board does not directly censor material by ordering cuts or changes. However, they are able to effectively censor media by refusing classification and making the media illegal for hire, exhibition and importation to Australia. Also, decisions made by the Board may be reviewed by the Australian Classification Review Board.
Who are they made up of? The members of the Classification Board are chosen to be broadly representative of the Australian community. This means that they are drawn from diverse areas, age groups and backgrounds. Board members are not required to hold any specific qualifications, but they must meet certain selection criteria which reflects the experience and qualities needed to effectively carry out their role.
Who are they made up of? The current permanent members of the Classification Board are: • Donald McDonald (Director) • Lesley O’Brien (Deputy director) • Georgina Dridan • Greg Scott • Amanda Apel • Zahid Gamieldien • Moya Glasson • Marit Andersen • Tennille Burdon • Lance Butler • Joe Guthrie • Serena Jakob
