The Heart • The heart regulates its beating with electrical pulses • We can see these pulses using an ECG device
Ventricular Fibrillation • Ventricular fibrillation is a medical term for chaotic electrical activity within the heart, stopping or slowing blood flow
What is a Defibrillator? • A defibrillator restores normal electrical impulses to the heart during ventricular fibrillation
The Power of Defibrillation • A corrective shock of 750-800 volts is applied within a tenth of a second • That is the same voltage as 500-533 AA batteries!
Types of Defibrillators Internal External
Internal Defibrillators A Pacemaker: • Steadies the heart beat under normal conditions • Triggers shock pulses when irregular heart beats are detected
External Defibrillators • Analyzes the patient and sets appropriate power levels • Prevents a shock from being administered to someone who is not in need of one • Provides the operator with verbal instructions throughout the defibrillation process
Engineers from Around the World • Who helped develop the defibrillator as we know it today? • Where are they from? • What did theycontribute? • What makes them an engineer?
ECG Activity There are many engineers behind the scene who rarely get recognized for what they do. These engineers are cool people too! Time to see what a heartbeat looks like!!!
