2. American uniforms • Brown was the official color of Continental army. But it soon changed as the years went by, to red, blue, or brown. • At the beginning of the war, uniform companies said the 13 colonies should wear unorganized uniforms. • The Minute Men would usually have to supply their own guns and they had no uniforms. • Blue facings (white button holes): North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia • Red facings: Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia • White facings: New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut • Buff facings: New York, New Jersey

3. British • They were called lobster backs or red coats because of the red uniforms. • The uniforms identify the rank and position of the soldier. • Loyalist usually wore their own civilian clothes, but some wanted to wear a blue or red coat. • They also wore headgear of bearskin caps, leather caps or tricorne hats depending on whether the troops were grenadiers, light infantry or battalion company men.
