  3. “Oh my God!” “Good Lord!” “God Almighty!” “For God’s sake!” “For the love of God!” “Lordy, Lordy!” “Lord have mercy!” “God help us!” “God bless you!” “Praise the Lord!” “As God as my witness!” “I swear to God!” “By God!” “Jesus Christ!” Some vain uses of God’s name in everyday life:

  4. Common by-words that invoke the name of God vainly: • gosh, golly, egad – “an exclamation of surprise or wonder; a euphemism for God” • gee, gee-whiz, jeez – “an exclamation of surprise or wonder; a euphemism for Jesus” -Webster’s New World Dictionary, 2nd College Edition

  5. The problem with talking vainly about the Lord: • It displays a careless attitude about God (Ecc. 5:2; Mt. 12:36-37) • It is an attempt to make God ordinary (Ps. 50:16-21; Is. 55:8-9) • It shows a lack of reverence and godly fear (Mt. 6:9; Heb. 12:28)
