ESD 113: Counselor Regional Meeting “Keeping Informed” Part 3 of 3 DaniseAckelson, Program Supervisor Navigation 101: College and Career Readiness Guidance & Counseling Mike Hubert, Director Guidance & Counseling Secondary Education and School Improvement
WHAT IS CGCP? A Comprehensive Guidance & Counseling Program is a competency-based programmatic approach to school counseling and associated educational units (e.g., career, technical, nurses, school psychologists) which is designed to be: • multi-systemic (school, home, and community) • collaborative (educators, families, community members) • developmental (aimed at helping students at their developmental level) • proactive and prevention-minded (supports students before crisis) • accountable to the stakeholders • educationally focused (helps students to reach educational, career, and personal-social goals)
SCHOOL COUNSELORS: DOING MORE WITH LESS • Individual student academic planning for graduation /career and college • Interpreting test scores • Counseling students about school attendance • Assisting principals with identifying and resolving student issues • Finding outside referrals for serious mental health issues • Leadership for guidance and counseling services throughout school • Paperwork for counseling office • Assessment administration • Discipline and suspension of students • Teaching a class • Performing clerical duties • Assisting with principal duties • Therapeutic counseling • Often hear “the counselors can do that”
Increased Accountability? The student? WHAT’S ON YOUR MIND TODAY? Violence / Bullying? Student disengagement? Tracking test scores? Tracking Credits? CAA alternatives? Transfer students? HSPE remediation? Changes in Math requirements? End-of Course exams? Funding cuts? Staffing cuts? Changing leadership? Student Homelessness? Student to counselor ratios? Lack of time to do the important things?
MANAGING CHANGE USING MODELS WITH STAFF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT • .
MORE STRATEGIES THAT WORK • Make a clear case for how you can be a strong positive influence in fulfilling the overall mission of the school, i.e. AYP. • Management agreement discussed and signed • Buy-in from faculty & staff, i.e. involvement • Buy-in from parents & PTA • Regular feedback/meetings with principal. i.e. what can I do within my area of expertise and guidelines to help make your job easier? • Advocating for all students in all the domains-academic, personal/social, career • Being a resource, consultant, confidante
WHY THE ASCA NATIONAL AND WA STATE FRAMEWORKS? • More time with students - Less time with paperwork • More time spent on counseling - Less time spent on non-counseling duties • More comprehensive programming – a focus for the program - Less “random acts of guidance” • Better results for all students • It is the “right thing to do for students”
FRAMEWORK WRITING TEAM MEMBERS • Richard Cleveland (WSCA) • Dr. Diana Gruman (WWU) • Megyn Shea (WSCA) • Dr. Chris Sink (SPU) • Norm Walker (WSCA) • Dr. Chris Wood (SU) • Karyn Holt (WSCA) • Dave Forrester (WSCA) • Representatives from the WA-ACTE CGCA division • Danise Ackelson (OSPI) • Mike Hubert (OSPI)

Counselors And Principals Do what counselors do best: • Get personal – find out about your principal / tell them about yourself • Develop empathy – the support you give your principal will come back to you • Build respect: • Be student-centered: remain an advocate for students • Be solution-focused: problem-solving requires cooperation • Keep your principal informed • Use data to show/prove your (counseling program) reason for existence
