The Indian Flag • The Indian flag has three horizontal bands of color: • saffron for courage and sacrifice • white for truth and peace • green for faith, fertility, and chivalry. An emblem of a wheel spinning used to be in the center of the white band, but when India gained independence, a Buddhist dharma chakra, or wheel of life, replaced the spinning wheel.
India Trivia • Birth place of Buddhism and Hinduism • Largest democracy in the world • The Lotus flower is an important symbol in the Hindu and Buddhist religions.

Cows are considered holy and can often be seen roaming freely in the street and have the right of way in traffic.
Land • Two huge walls of mountains-the Karakoram Range and the Himalaya, form India’s northern border and separate it from the rest of Asia. • In the middle of the country the Satpura Range divide the country. • North of the Satpura lies the Ganges Plain. It holds the most fertile soil and about 40% of the population. The Ganges River flows through the Ganges Plain to the Bay of Bengal.
Land • To the west lies the Great Indian Desert. • In the middle of the country lies the Deccan Plateau. It is full of rich soil and valuable mineral resources.

Climate • Most of India is warm or hot all year long. The Himalayas block cold weather blowing south from Central Asia. • Monsoons, or seasonal winds blow steady in the same direction for months and influence the climate. • India has 3 seasons-Cool, Hot and Rainy.
Economy • Agriculture and Industry are both important in India. 2/3rd of the people are farmers that work on small farms. • Major crops include wheat, cotton, tea, jute (plant whose fiber is used to make rope and burlap) and rice. India is the 2nd leading producer of rice (China #1). • Huge factories in the cities turn out textiles and iron/steel products.
Economy • Recently American computer companies have been opening offices in India. Computer software is produced in India. • Many Indian products are made in cottage industries, that means it is a home or village based industry in which family members do all of the work.
Economy Continued Environmental Challenges/Issues • Rapid economic growth has brought challenges. • Forests are cleared for farmland. • Water and land have been polluted from burning coal and pesticides, or chemicals used to kill insects. • The Ganges River is considered to be the most polluted river in the entire world. • All of these have played a part in destroying the animal habitats in India. India’s elephant, lion, tiger, leopard, monkey and panther populations have been greatly reduced.
India’s People • More than 1 billion people live in India. It is the world’s 2nd most populated country. • Hindi is the official language. • The Hindu religion plays a major role in daily life. • India’s society was divided into a caste system-a caste was a social class based on a person’s ancestry. Your caste determined the jobs you could have and who you could marry. The caste system still influences life but the government has past laws forbidding the unfair treatment of groups of people.
India History • India’s history was greatly influenced by Muslims from SW Asia. The set up an empire in India called the Mogul Empire and ruled for 200 years. • India became a British colony in 1700’s. They gave up India in the mid-1900’s when Indian leader Mohandas Gandhi lead a nonviolent resistance to British rule. • Today it is a federal republic that is run by a coalition or group of people. The prime minister is the leader of the government.
Religion in India • About 80% of the people in India are Hindus, or followers of Hinduism. • Hinduism is a polytheistic religion, that means the people worship many different gods.
Religion in India The key belief in Hinduism is that after the body dies, the soul of a person is reborn in a different form. This is called “reincarnation”. They believe this process is repeated until the soul reaches perfection-”nirvana”. This is why many Hindus feel it is wrong to kill any type of animal. Cows are particularly holy and are allowed to roam freely.
