Leading causes of death in America include: • Heart disease • Cancer • Lower respiratory disease • Stroke • Accidents • Alzheimer’s disease • Diabetes • Flu and pneumonia • Kidney disease • Suicide (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012) How many of these deaths can we help prevent by eating healthier?

  3. What Can We Do to Help Prevent These Diseases? • Eat healthier • Limit alcohol consumption • Exercise • Avoid tobacco products www.heart-valve-surgery.com www.drugfree.org

  4. What is a Healthy Diet? Dietary Guidelines for Americans says… • “Consume more of certain foods and nutrients such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fat-free and low-fat dairy products, and seafood.” • “Consume fewer foods with sodium (salt), saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, added sugars and refined grains.” (U.S Department of Health and Human Services, 2012.

How Can YOU Eat Healthier? • Consume more fresh foods; such as: • Fruits • Vegetables • Lean meats • Like chicken • Whole grains • 100% whole-wheat or whole-grain bread • Brown rice • Low-fat or non-fat dairy products • Use olive oil, canola or vegetable oil instead of animal fat when cooking. • Reduce the amount of processed foods you eat; such as: • Chips • Refined grains • White bread • White rice • Sugary cereals
