  2. ENVIRONMENT Where do we live? What resources do we have? What are my responsibilities?

  3. FEUDALISM IN ENGLAND • Feudalism in England was institutionalized by William the Conqueror.

  4. How did feudalism affect England? • Feudalism weakened the power of the nobility and strengthened the power of the King of England.

  5. How did the nobles feel about the Feudalism? • The nobles rejected the growing power of the king, and decided to rebel against King John.

  6. What did the nobles do about King John? • They forced King John to sign the Magna Carta.

  7. How do historians view the Magna Carta? • The Magna Carta is considered one of history’s most important democratic documents.

  8. What did the Magna Carta accomplish? • The document set forth the rights of the English people and limited the power of the king.

  9. DISCUSSION • Discuss the following with your partner: • Why do you think King John signed the document if it limited his power?

  10. WRITING • Write 2-3 sentence about the following: • What is the importance of the Magna Carta?

  11. Were the rights granted to everyone? • Originally, the rights only applied to the nobility. • As time passed, the rights applied to all English citizens.

  12. What rights are in the Magna Carta? • Rule of Law • Development of representative assemblies • Right to approve taxes • Trial by jury

  13. Textbook Time • Read the Primary Source on page 537 (In yellow box). • Why do you think this part of the Magna Carta is important?

  14. How did the Magna Carta affect feudalism? • The Magna Carta limited the power of the king weakening the feudal system in England. • This idea spreads and weakens feudalism in the rest of Europe as well.

  15. What effects did the Magna Carta have on the government of England? • To apply the rules of the document, a Great Council was established which advised the king to the interest of the nobles.

  16. What did the Great Council become? • The Great Council grew into the English Parliament, which was the first democratic body in modern Europe.

  17. MAGNA CARTA PLAY

  18. Scene One • John, King of England: Ha haha. I’m King John. I can do anything that I want because I am the king! I think that I will raise taxes on the nobles. If they don’t like it, I will throw them in jail. • Note: King John raised taxes and threw people in jail without a fair trial.

  19. Scene two A group of nobles meet to discuss King John’s behavior: Noble one: King John’s taxes are too high! Noble two: Yes, and he is putting people in prison without giving them a fair trial. Noble three: Something must be done about his behavior. What can we do? Noble four: I’ll tell you what we can do. We can refuse to obey him unless he gives us the rights that we deserve! Note: Nobles demanded that King John should sign a document that limited the King’s power.

  20. Scene Three The nobles meet with King John. King John: What do you want? I order you to go away! Nobles: No way! Noble one: If you want our support, you must agree to our demands. Noble two: You must give people fair trials before you throw them in jail. Noble three: You can only collect taxes if the Great Council agrees. Noble four: You must agree that both the king and the vassals have certain rights and duties. Nobles: You must sign the Magna Carta! Note: This document was called the Magna Carta.

  21. Scene Four • King John: This is terrible. Signing the Magna Carta means that people have rights and that the power of the government has limits. • Note: The Magna Carta limited the power of the government and was an important step towards a representative form of government.
