What is Statistics? • Statistics are numerical data relating to a group of individuals; statistics is also the name for the science of collecting, analyzing and interpreting such data. 6thGrade Meaning • Statistics deals with collecting, organizing, and interpreting pieces of information or data.
How do you collect Statistics? • Statistics are collected by asking questions. • These questions must be asked correctly or you can’t display the information on a chart or graph. • All of the questions that are asked must be a Statistical Question ; this ensures that you will have variability, a target population and your question is interesting.

Examples of Statistical Questions • What type of toppings do 6th graders at Dunbar like on their pizza? • What is the favorite subject of the 6th graders at Dunbar? • Who is the favorite teacher of the 6th graders at Dunbar? • Ask yourself, “Does this question have the 3 important parts below?” • Specifies a certain population • Ask interesting question to the population • There will be variability in answers( 4- 6 answers)

Convert Non-Statistical questions into Statistical question • Do you like ice cream? • Who was the first president of the United States? • Do you like McDonalds? • Do you like Nike tennis shoes? • Do you like rock music? • Remember that all statistical question must contain 3 important properties? • 1. Has a target audience and the audience is named • 2. Question must be interesting to audience • 3. Answer must have variability (4-6 answers)
