Current Context • 85% Teachers use computer for admin • <50% Teachers use computer for instr • Only 54% report impact on teaching • LoTI (p.35): 48% 0-2 / 11% 4B-6 (Fig 2.1, p. 36)
Challenges • What to Teach (Content) • How best to teach it (pedagogy) • What resources to use (instr materials) • Managing students/res (class mgt) • Monitor student progress (assessment) • New learning standards, performance goals to meet, innovation expectations • Time constraints
Goals • Shift from conventional instruction to student-centered, inquiry based model (see Table 2.2, p. 38) • Technology must be embedded to have greatest effect (see Table 2.3, p. 39-40) • Significant paradigm shift!
Change Agent Strategy • Specify types of learning experiences • Provide models of tech uses desired • Immerse teachers in professional learning experiences as expected • Provide a process for design • Communicate research-based rationale • Link to curriculum & instr initiatives • Understand & support concept change • Ongoing / cyclical planning • Be patient & realistic
Discussion • Read and Discuss Case Study, pages 47-48 of the Text
