  2. Introduction • A new operating system has been released by Microsoft titled Windows 7. We had figured that it would be a great idea to upgrade the current computers at Sheridan College. • Testing the operating system in order to make sure it is compatible with the necessary software and hardware will be a major part of project planning. • There are risks involved in performing such a task so we had decided to take a significant amount of time for various testing and also for the installation procedures. • We will be using an image created which will have all the necessary applications for student and faculty use around the campus. To start us off we would initially purchase 5 licenses of Windows 7 Professional 32-bit for all of our testing needs. • We had decided upon Windows 7 as it is the most recent Operating System from Microsoft and it is a great improvement from Windows Vista and XP in regards to security, bugs and glitches. It requires fewer resources than Vista and features a very user friendly interface.

  3. Core Project Team Members

  4. Reason for Our Project • Members of the team work for ITSC Sheridan. • Allows for further research about the new Windows 7 Operating System. • Users with Windows Vista OS experiencing difficulties. • Allows for overall greater experience when using computers.

  5. Project Charter Project Title: Windows 7 Installation on the Sheridan College Desktops Date of Authorization: October 6, 2009 Project Start Date: October 6, 2009 End Date: August 24, 2010 Key Schedule Milestones: • Complete gathering information about the current applications used by December 4, 2009. • Complete the system requirements test by April 1, 2010. • Complete the installation of Windows 7 and require software by August 17, 2010. • Provide training reference materials for new users by early summer to be ready for the start of the new school year.

  6. Project Charter Continued... Budget Information: Sheridan College has allocated $250,000.00 for the project and additional funds are available if needed. The majority costs of the project will be for internal labour. Project Manager: Vinitha Liyanage (vinitha.liyanage@sheridanc.on.ca) Project Objectives: To test and implement Windows 7 on the Sheridan College desktop computers to replace Windows XP. Main Project Success Criteria: Once the project has been implemented, it would maintain or exceed the current levels and performance of the computers and printing servers.

  7. Project Charter Continued... Approach: • Begin hiring part-time staff as soon as possible. • Within the first month, develop a clear work breakdown structure, scope statement and produce the Gantt chart detailing the work required to complete. • Research the differences between the different versions of Windows 7 to determine which one will be the best application for the Sheridan College environment. (i.e.: Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, 32-bit, 64-bit). • Purchase all required hardware upgrades for the current computers within the first two months. • Purchase all required licenses for Windows 7. • Hold weekly progress review meetings with the core project team. • Conduct thorough software tests per the approved testing plan.

  8. System Installation Requirements • 1 GHz or Faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) Processor • 1 GB RAM for 32-bit or 2 GB RAM for 64-bit • 16 GB Hard Drive Space (32-bit) or 20 GB Hard Drive Space (64-bit) • DirectX 9 Graphics Device with WDDM v1.0 or Higher Driver • For Use of Windows XP Mode: Additional 1 GB of RAM and 15 GB of Hard Drive Space is required.

  9. Upgrade Process • Computers using Windows XP require a clean installation of the new operating system. • Those using Windows Vista are able to upgrade using Anytime Upgrade which installs the OS over top of the previous within 10-15 minutes. • Note: Since computers are to be loaded with Windows 7 Professional, those with Windows Vista Home Premium and below are required to have two installations. First an Anytime Upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium and then a second Anytime Upgrade to Windows 7 Professional.

  10. Tools and Documents • Project Charter (MS Word) • Gantt Chart (MS Project) • Work Breakdown Structure (MS Visio) • Report (MS Word) • PowerPoint Presentation (MS PowerPoint) • Website (www.wordpress.com) • Risk Management Plan (MS Excel)

  13. Gantt Chart Continued...

  14. Risk Assessment

  15. Obstacles and Challenges • Large quantity of work difficult to divide between team members. • One of the group members is unable to attend school on a regular basis. • Creating the Gantt chart and deciding which tasks and what order. This had been revisited many times while progressing along in the project. • It had been noted that a significant amount of time is required when planning out the stages of a project.

  16. Summary • Project was an excellent learning experience. • Discovered the amount of effort required for planning a successful project. • Dividing the work had made the project less challenging as a group. • We were able to conquer through the challenges and obstacles and find adequate solutions. • Contribution from each and every group member allowed for the project to be a success. • Learnt from our mistakes and did everything possible to make the implementation of Windows 7 on the Sheridan Network a success with a reasonable amount of time and resources.
