El Pretérito. Spanish 2 Sra. Kimbrough. The Preterite. There are 2 different sets of conjugations in the preterite: the “AR” conjugation and the “ER/IR” conjugation. Just like all tenses, some verbs are irregular in the preterite, which means they won’t follow these conjugations.

  2. The Preterite There are 2 different sets of conjugations in the preterite: the “AR” conjugation and the “ER/IR” conjugation. Just like all tenses, some verbs are irregular in the preterite, which means they won’t follow these conjugations.

  3. AR VERBS IN THE PRETERITE -é -amos -aste -asteis -aron -ó

  4. ER/IR VERBS IN THE PRETERITE -í -imos -iste -isteis -ieron -ió

  5. Practice Bebiste Caminaron Escuché Escribió Llamamos Entendieron Put the following verbs in the preterite. Beber (Tú) 2. Caminar (Ellos) 3. Escuchar (Yo) 4. Escribir (Ud.) 5. Llamar (Nosotros) 6. Entender (Uds.)

  6. -CAR VERBS WHY? Conjugate “Tocar” in the preterite Because it comes before “e”, the “C” makes the “s” sound here, when it should make the “k” sound like the rest of the c’s in the conjugation. TocéTocamos Tocaste TocóTocaron Verbs that end in –car will have a different conjugation in the “YO” form.

  7. -CAR VERBS IN THE PRETERITE Remove the “C” -qué -amos -aste -asteis -aron -ó

  8. -GAR VERBS WHY? Conjugate “Jugar” in the preterite Because it comes before “e”, the “G” makes the “h” sound here, when it should make the “G” sound like the rest of the g’s in the conjugation. Jugé Jugamos Jugaste Jugó Jugaron Verbs that end in –gar will have a different conjugation in the “YO” form.

  9. -GAR VERBS IN THE PRETERITE -gué -amos -aste -asteis -aron -ó

  10. -ZAR VERBS WHY? Conjugate “Empezar” in the preterite The “Z” in front of an “e” will make a “th” sound in Spain. Because of that, it does not go with the rest of the conjugations. EmpezéEmpezamos Empezaste EmpezóEmpezaron Verbs that end in –zar will have a different conjugation in the “YO” form.

  11. -ZAR VERBS IN THE PRETERITE Remove the “Z” -cé -amos -aste -asteis -aron -ó

  12. Practice Put the following verbs in the preterite. Cruzar (Yo) 2. Afeitar (Ellos) 3. Tocar (Yo) 4. Jugar (Ud.) 5. Correr (Nosotros) 6. Comenzar (Yo)
