Trotsky's role in the Russian Revolution • Leon Trotsky was the leader in the 1917 Russian Revolution. • He officially joined the Bolshevik Party in August and allied himself with Lenin. • The success of the Russian Revolution made Lenin the new leader of the Soviet government. Then Trotsky was second in command only to Lenin.
Power struggle • Trotsky wanted to be Lenin successor after Lenin suffered a stroke in 1922. Joe Stalin also wanted to be Lenin successor. • When Lenin died in 1924 Stalin replaced Lenin and Trotsky slowly began to loose power under stains power. • Shortly after Stalin took power Trotsky was kicked out of the Bolshevik party and then kicked out of the country. Assassination in 1940 • On may 24, 1940 soviet agents machine-gunned Trotsky's house while he and his family were all inside. Luckily they all survived. • On August 20, 1940 Trotsky was sitting at a desk at the library when Ramon Mercader smashed a mountaineering ice pick into the back of Trotsky's skull. Trotsky didn’t die instantly he fought back and yelled Ramon Mercader name so people would know who killed him. • Trotsky was 60 years old when he die.
