  9. Do you know this person? Guess who he is according to the clues. Clue 1: He is one of England’s greatest writers. Who is he? Clue 2: He is often described as the “quintessential Victorian author”(维多利亚时期最有代表性的作家). Clue 3: He wrote many classic novels, including David Copperfield, Oliver Twist and Great Expectations.

  10. Charles Dickens was born on 7 February 1812 in Portsmouth, England. He had a happy childhood after his family moved to Chatham. At the age of 12, Dickens had to leave school because his father was imprisoned for debt. The poverty and adversity Dickens experienced as a child greatly influenced his later views on social reform. Before his death on 9 June 1870, he wrote about 15 major novels and many short stories, most of which are famous for their surprising endings.

Elements towards building a good persuasive essay include: • establishing facts to support an argument • clarifying relevant values for your audience • prioritizing(优先处理), editing, and/or sequencing the facts and values in importance to build the argument • forming and stating conclusions • “persuading” your audience that your conclusions are based upon the agreed-upon facts and shared values • having the confidence to communicate your “persuasion” in writing This passage is a persuasive essay. The author wants us to appreciate classic literature. Then she gives us interesting facts about Charles Dickens and his book Great Expectations. At the start, she asks us to change our minds about classic literature. In this persuasive essay, how does the author try to convince us to appreciate classic literature? Do you want to read the book? If you do, then the author has written a good persuasive essay. Reading strategy: reading a persuasive essay In persuasive or argumentative writing, we try to convince others to agree with our facts, share our values, accept our argument and conclusions, and adopt our way of thinking.  She gives us enough information to make us interested, but not enough to give away the story.

  36. Why is literature important? Works of literature, at their best, provide a kind of blueprint of human civilization. From the writings of ancient civilizations like Egypt, and China, to Greek philosophy and poetry; from the epics of Homer to the plays of Shakespeare, from Jane Austen and Charlotte Brontë to Maya Angelou, works of literature give insight and context to all the world's societies.
