An Invitation • Do your country’s leaders want to work with high school students in your region to help them develop their entrepreneurship, business, global economic, leadership and teamwork skills? • Do you want these young “protégés” to become champions? • Do you truly want to create better futures for the youth in your country? Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

  5. The Overall Idea • SAGEGLOBAL wants to work with you to start India SAGE • To begin a SAGE program in a country, you must find at least three high schools to participate; high schools must address 10 criteria in order to be competitive Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

Why Is It Called“SAGE?” • The acronym stands for Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship. • SAGE is an international NETWORK that links secondary school student organizations to university student mentors to advance global entrepreneurship in an ethical and socially-responsible manner. Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

Why participate in SAGE? • High school students have greater potential than what adults perceive. • Employers are looking for students who can lead projects in unstructured settings • They want students who can present well, both in writing and verbally • University students make outstanding business consultants for younger students • Students don’t take a “test” at the end of the year; they make a “presentation” to an influential panel of judges • Learning by doing (i.e., experiential learning and project-based learning) Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

  9. How Does a New Country Get Started? • A SAGE “champion” from the business community, or an institution of higher education, is identified. • He or she notifies SAGE World HQ; we send this person a “How to Start SAGE in Your Country” set of instructions • This champion identifies at least three high schools in your area • Each high school should have a teacher or adviser who agrees to become the SAGE Coach. • The champion works with each coach to help the high school SAGE students complete at least one entrepreneurship venture and one social venture (see details in the SAGE Training Manual on our website at http://sageglobal.org). To recruit a high school, we suggest any or all of the following: • You can contact the local high school districts and ask if there are any entrepreneurial or business teachers that would like college mentors throughout the year; • Offer to make a presentation at an upcoming school board meeting. • Use your network through your country’s Ministry of Education to gain access to entrepreneurial teachers Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

To recruit a high school, we suggest any or all of the following: • Make a presentation to a school assembly or an existing student group (e.g., like Junior Achievement, business academies, etc.). • Bring a few copies of the SAGE Information Handbook (retrieve from http://sageglobal.org) Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

Why Would A High School Want To Be Involved? • Near the end of each academic year (preferably March or April), the high schools from each region will come together for the regional high school tournament hosted by the SAGE host (e.g., the SAGE champion’s company or university). • The high school that is judged to be that region’s “champion” earns recognition, prize money and an invitation to travel to the SAGE World Cup Competition (in 2009, it is in Brazil on 9-13 August). Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

SAGE World Cup • The 2006 SAGE World Cup took place August 3-6, 2006 in Shanghai, China. • The 2007 SAGE World Cup took place August 1-6, 2007 in Odessa, Ukraine • The 2008 SAGE World Cup took place July 21-28, 2008 in Abuja, Nigeria. * The 2009 World Cup will be in Brazil in August 2009.   14. HOSTING A SAGE COMPETITON • If you volunteer to be a “host” organization for at least three competing high school SAGE teams you will be designated “SAGE Country” host. Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

Hosting A SAGE Competition • There is no fee to establish a SAGE program in a region. • There is no required model for setting up a SAGE program in a region, and each program makes the decisions in each region. • The only requirement is that each High School SAGE team follows the ten judging criteria Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

In their annual report and verbal presentation, how effective were the students in demonstrating that they: Completed at least one new “for profit” entrepreneurship venture (10 points) Competed at lease one continuing “for profit” entrepreneurship venture (10 points) Completed at least one new “social” entrepreneurship venture (10 points) Completed at least one continuing “social” entrepreneurship venture (10 points) Included at least one type of “global” component in their venture(s) (10 points) SAGE Judging Criteria (10 Total) Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

In their annual report and verbal presentation, how effective were the students in demonstrating that they: 6.Understand the importance of civic engagement in a democratic society (10 points) 7. Understand the importance of being responsible stewards of the environment (10 points) SAGE Judging Criteria 4-5 Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

  18. In their projects, how effective were the students in: 7. Utilizing their resources, including at least one or two college mentors and three Business Advisory Board members (10 points) 9. Hosting A SAGE Competition • It is the responsibility of each SAGE host to organize and fund a regional competition. • This includes arranging travel to the competitions, and providing prize money and awards for the competing high school teams. Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

How To Fund ASAGE Competition • SAGEGLOBAL has had great success through partnerships with major companies who support our mission. • U.S. companies who support SAGE include Allstate Insurance, Deloitte, Walgreens, NUMMI, Wells Fargo Bank, Bank of the West, Louis and Harold Price Foundation, GotVMail • Other examples: Brazil: Record TV and 100% Publishing Co. • Nigeria: Nikon Insurance; Abuja Enterprise Agency; ExxonMobil; Dangote Group • Ukraine: First Credit Union and “100%” Publishing Co. • Russia: Tula Chamber of Commerce; Russia Ministry of Education • Philippines: PYEN (Philippines Youth Entrepreneurship Network) • South Africa: Free State Ministry of Education; loveLife Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

  21. How To Fund ASAGE Competition • Involve your local business leaders in identifying high school teams, and potential projects. • Then, invite them to judge the high school presentations. • The more you involve them, the more they feel like they are part of the SAGE family. Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

How To Fund ASAGE Competition • Examples of sample grant proposals can be downloaded from the SAGE website at http://sageglobal.org • Another great way to attract sponsorships is to make presentations to local business and civic groups. • In the US, such groups include the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Kiwanis, and Suroptimist Club. Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

  23. How To Fund ASAGE Competition • SAGE is a cutting-edge, innovative program, and funding may not be easy in the first year. However, • If you are successful the first year and you publicize the results, funding will become easier over time. • The key is to embrace SAGE’s leadership philosophy: “People support what they help create.” • Toward this end, SAGE HQ can provide you with sample press releases and public service announcements that have aired on local TV and radio. • You can use your own extensive network to attract financial support Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

Why Is This Project So Important? • Financial concepts and entrepreneurship are not taught well in the high schools. • According to the Jumpstart Coalition for Personal Literacy, 50% of U.S. high school seniors don’t make the grade in their knowledge of managing money, investing and savings. • Also, a recent Gallup survey found that, even though 70% of high school students want to start their own business, more than half acknowledged that their understanding of business issues is poor. • What is the situation in Thailand? Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

Why Is This Project So Important? • A recent poll of 800 students conducted at the International Business Student Exposition and Career Opportunity Fair, showed that an understanding of the global workplace/culture was the area in which students thought they were least prepared for in the working world. • As today's youth become the leaders of tomorrow, it is vital for them to learn how trade affects many aspects of their lives. But the subject of international trade is not generally included in the high school curriculum; the subject is largely absent from our schools. Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

SAGEGLOBAL Assistance • We assist people from all regions in establishing a regional High School SAGE organization and can provide training support, but no direct financial support. • SAGE HQ can help with fundraising ideas in a region. • SAGE HQ provides training for a host campus. Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship

  27. Other Information • As far as rules, one just needs to follow the format that SAGE HQ uses in the SAGE Training Manual • Ultimately, if your organization (e.g., business or university) wants to become the host site for the High SAGE competition, you must first be certified by SAGE HQ in order to avoid duplication of effort. SAGE USA and SAGE World Cup • The winner of the each USA state SAGE competition is eligible to participate in SAGE USA Competition on May 29-31, 2009 in San Mateo • The winner of the SAGE USA competition will represent the USA in the SAGE World Cup Competition in August 9-13, 2009 in Brazil Students for the Advancement of Global Entrepreneurship
