  3. Your 5th Grader’s Day • Our schedule is in your child’s AGENDA planner (on next slide) • Lunch 11:10-11:43 Healthy snack & water bottle recommended • Specials Schedule in red HW folder (Tech is new to your child this year)! • BOCH/ Lessons/ Flex time

  4. 5th Grade Math • NYS Standards Based Expressions Math Program • Follow COMMON CORE State Standards • SEE PACKET!! • NYS MATH ASSESSMENT GIVEN May 2nd & 3rd • Unit 1 Fractions (Adding & Subtracting) • Unit 2 Decimals • Unit 3 Fractions (Multiplying & Dividing) • Unit 4 Multiplication • Unit 5 Division • Unit 6 Operations & Problem Solving • Unit 7 Algebra, Patterns & Coordinates • Unit 8 Measurement & Data

  5. Math Practice & Technology • IXL - Math Problem Solving & Basic Fact Knowledge/ Speed practice • Requirement: students practice for 45 minutes each week (can do at home & school). Students are rewarded each week if they have over an hour! • FASTT Math program, Stretch-to-Go and learnzillion are also great!

  6. Components of Literacy • Reading Skills: • Direct/ guided instruction of comprehension and fluency skills • Engage NY Modules/ Common Core Standards • High interest, core novels will be used • Shared/ Paired Reading: • We will student selected novels for BOOK CLUBS • Students need a novel to read at school/home at all times (Required 20-30 minutes per night for HW) • Vocabulary enrichment • NYS ELA Testing April 11th & 12th

Components of Writing • Writer’s Workshop (formal writing) • Directed Writing/ Published • Personal Narrative, Persuasive, Explanatory, Descriptive, Expository, Comparison, Poetry, Argument Writing • Peer-tutoring/ Coaching/ Cooperative work • Writer’s Notebook/ optional Free Write for pleasure!

  8. 5th Grade Science & Health • Science • Living Environment/ Mammals • Rocks & Minerals • Earth, Moon, Sun • Environmental Factors/ Weather • Matter • Health • Body Systems • Foods for Good Nutrition • Human Growth & Development (A note will be sent home prior to showing the DVD) Final 5th Grade WSS Science Exam given in JUNE

  10. Classroom Management • WSS Code of Conduct – READ together! • Chipping In for a GREAT Year! • Goal of Behavior System • Great Character = GOLD Chips/ PAT • Check RED HW FOLDERS daily • Please sign (initial) your child’s chip count on the weekend any time before Monday morning!

  11. Grading Policy • Grades & Parent Portal (SAVE grading policies and correction rules sheet all year) • Absences or missing academic subject due to instrumental lessons – students are responsible to find out what they missed & make up their work

  12. Super Fun Stuff! • Field Trips (TBD – chaperones will be needed) • Class parties - please sign up to donate before you leave! • Birthdays (25 students) -treats are not expected, but welcome. We typically do this at the end of the day for about 10 minutes, so please… no treats that need to be cut! Please provide napkins! Please provide spoons for ice cream treats.

  13. PT Conferences/ Other • Please sign-up tonight @ the table outside the classroom door! November 30th (Thursday) OR December 1st (Friday) • PTOmembership drive is ON! Fundraisers optional, but please return Entertainment book if you are not selling it! • Class directory optional
