  3. Trends in Incidence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest in Perth, Western Australia, 1996-2010

LOCATION: -Perth, Australia -single ambulance service (St John’s Ambulance) Background • Estimates of the incidence of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) are important to determine the burden of OHCA and provision of services. • This study aims to investigate temporal trends in the incidence of OHCA in metropolitan Perth (Western Australia) between 1996 to 2010.

Methods • Age and sex standardised incidence rates (ASIRs) using the direct method were calculated for all Perth OHCA cases attended by St John Ambulance (Western Australia)(SJA-WA) using SJA-WA OHCA data. • Australian Bureau of Statistics population numbers for the Perth Statistical Division were used for rate denominators and the 2011 Australian population used as the population standard. • Incidence rates are reported per 100,000 population and in four age categories (paediatric=0-14, young adult=15-34, adult=35-64, older adults=65+).

  7. Results • Over the 15-year period, there were 13,280 OHCA attended by SJA-WA in Perth.

Conclusions • Overall, a decreasing temporal trend in the incidence of OHCA in Perth was observed prior to 2002, and is largely attributed to a decreasing incidence in the population aged over 65 years. • ASIRs in Perth have since remained fairly constant. • Australia-wide OHCA incidence data is required to form the basis for monitoring the impact of public health and clinical interventions.
