Identifying Mineral Steps • Pick a mineral • Color – write down all the colors of the mineral • Density • Use triple beam balance to find Mass • Volume is given • Use calculator: Mass ÷ Volume = Density 4. Use the Hardness Test Chart • Fingernail = 2.5 • Penny = 3.5 • Nail = 5.5 • Streak plate = 6.5 5. Luster = shiny 6. Streak • rub mineral on both streak plates • Describe color of powder 7. Texture – feel the mineral (rough or smooth?) 8. Use the chart on the back to match the mineral that comes closest to your descriptions
