  2. ULO A user-led organisation is one where the people the organisation represents, or provides services to, have a majority on the Management Committee or Board, and where there is clear accountability to members and/or service users

  3. How does a ULO operate? While there is broad agreement about the values and functions of a ULO, there are many ways of putting these into practice.

  5. Community Interest Company With People. Edinburgh CICs are limited companies with additional features They are created for the use of people who want to conduct a business or other activity for community benefit Not purely for private advantage This is achieved by a "community interest test" and "asset lock“ This ensures that the CIC is established for community purposes and the assets and profits are dedicated to these purposes.

Suffolk County Council A social enterprise is a business with primarily social objectives Surpluses are principally reinvested in the business or in the community They are not interested in maximising profit for shareholders or owners Social enterprises tackle a wide range of social and environmental issues They use business solutions to achieve public good. The Government believes that social enterprises have a distinct and valuable role to play in helping create a strong, sustainable and socially inclusive economy

Bradford These are private limited companies where the liability of the members is limited   A company limited by guarantee has members who are guarantors instead of shareholders Limitation of liability takes the form of a guarantee from its members to pay a nominal sum in the event of the company being wound up The amount of money that is guaranteed can be as little as £1 and will be stated within the constitution of the company (the Memorandum & Articles of Association).

CHARITABLE INCORPORATED ORGANISATION • The Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) is a new corporate structure designed specifically for charities. • Members and trustees are safeguarded from liabilities the charity incurs • The charity can conduct business in its own name rather than in the name of its trustees • The CIO is expected to be an option available for charities in early 2011.

Centre for Independent LivingManchester CIL A CIL is a private, non-profit consumer-controlled organisation It provides non-residential and non-medical Independent Living Services for disabled people of all ages Consumer-Controlled means that over 51 % of the Board of Directors and staff at a CIL are Disabled People Every CIL has four services that it must offer -advocacy, peer support, information and referral, and independent living skills training.

  11. Partnership/Network/ConsortiumDisability Solutions. Hanley Collaborative working between voluntary organisations may be desirable : A larger partnership may be more sustainable Joining forces will help provide services to a wider user group Creates a stronger Voice Help each other to compete for funding from major grant providers Lead Organisation Joint letter of Agreement, formal Partnership Agreement or Memorandum of Understanding
