  1. The Effects of Inherited Disorders on Gonadotropin Hormones, LH & FSH A Review Presentation By Myriam K. Louis

  2. Gonadotropin Hormones • LH – Luteinizing Hormone • FSH – Follicle Stimulating Hormone • Anterior Pituitary Glycoprotein Hormones • Secreted by the Gonadotropes • Secretion regulated by Releasing & Inhibiting Hormones • Actions mediated by cAMP

  3. Gonadotropin Hormones • LH – Luteinizing Hormone • FSH – Follicle Stimulating Hormone • Anterior Pituitary Glycoprotein Hormones • Secreted by the Gonadotropes • Secretion regulated by Releasing & Inhibiting Hormones • Actions mediated by cAMP

  4. In Women Target organ: Ovaries Stimulate conversion of ovarian follicle to Corpus Luteum Acts on Corpus Luteum to stimulate Estrogen and Progestogen Secretion In Men Target Organ: Testis Predominant regulator of testicular steroidogenesis Acts on leydig cells to stimulates production of testicular androgens LH - Luteinizing Hormone

  5. In Women It Stimulates Follicular Growth It Stimulates Aromatization of Androgens In Men It Stimulates Production of Androgen Binding Protein It Stimulates Estrogen Formation from Androgens FSHFollicle Stimulating Hormone

  6. Purpose of Experiment • To research the effects of inherited genetic disorders, if any, on the gonads, the gonadotropin, reproduction, to better evaluate and advise infertile patients of the cause of infertility.

  7. Inherited/Genetic Disorders - Disorder in which the DNA is changed, Mutated • Mutation, an inherited alteration of genetic material • Examples: base pair substitution, chromosome aberrations, franeshift or silent substitution, deletion, inversion etc..

  8. Gene Disorder Identification • Many genes serve as regulators of Hypothalamic Pituitary Gonadal Axis • Mutations in these genes were identified and associated with impaired gonadotropin release or function

  9. Gene Disorders • Mutations n various Genes identified as causing gonadotropin release or function

  10. FSH Mutations • FSH Mutation found in beta subunit

  11. LH Mutation • LH Mutation found in beta subunit

  12. Conclusion • Genetic mutations in FSH and LH seem to impair reproduction • Future research in this area would provide insight in to the role of transcription factors, hormones and receptor in reproduction.
