  2. Employment and Finances • At the lowest point in the Great Depression, in 1933, 25% of the workforce was unemployed. This amounted to about 15 million people. • 9,000 banks went out of business and 86,000 businesses failed. • The cash income of a black family rarely reached $100 a year.

  3. Agricultural • 1in 4 farms were sold during the depression to meet financial obligations. • Sharecropping families ended up in more debt than before from this system, while the landowners flourished with crops and money. • 3 million black sharecroppers out a total 8.5 million, suffered greatly through the great depression. • Effects of sharecropping included: Poor health, illiteracy, low farming skills, dependence and lack of expectation.
