  1. Ancient India Vocabulary

  2. subcontinent A large area of land that is part of a continent, but is separated in some way by geography. India is separated by the Himalayan Mountains, the Indus River, the Arabian Sea & the Indian Ocean.

  3. Monsoon The season when moist winds blowing from the Indian Ocean toward the Indian Subcontinent bring heavy rains.

  4. Deforestation • The widespread cutting down of trees

  5. Caste • A group within a social class. The cast system includes: • Head: Brahmans/priests & scholars • Arms: Kshatriyas/rulers • Legs: Vaisyas/merchants & professionals • Feet: Sudras/laborers & servants • NOT PART OF THE CASTE SYSTEM: untouchables

  6. Sanskrit • A language of India, first spoken by the Ancient Aryans

  7. reincarnation • The belief that the soul lives on after death and returns to life in a new body.

  8. Arabic Numerals The base-ten number system: numbers 1 through 9, including 0 (zero)

  9. inoculation • Giving a person a mild form of a disease so that he or she will not get sick with a more serious form.
