What is Communication? • Communication is the movement of ideas and information. • How is communication like transportation? How is it different?
Are you communicating now? • Yes, you are! You are communicating just by reading the ideas and information on this presentation. • Name some of the ways you have communicated today.
Communication is an Endangered Species! • 3, 500 Languages could become extinct by the end of the century. • Almost 80% of the world’s population now speaks only 1% of the world’s 7,000 languages. • Why do you think this has happened?
Answer: Globalization • Globalization means countrie are more connected through trade, money and workers. • When countries work together, people must be able to communicate. • That means many people have to learn another language. • English is the main language used through out the world for business and the Internet.
Why is this a problem? • When the last person that speaks a particular language dies, some of the knowledge that is found within that language dies with them.
What happens when a language dies? • The history of people dies. • The history of how the people used their environment dies. • The people’s beliefs and ideas die.
How can we save communication? • Technology • YouTube • Facebook • Other forms of Social Media
How can technology save communcation? • By using technology, languages spoken by only a few people can be taught to other people around the world? • Have you ever tried to learn another language? Tell your classmates about your experiences.
How has informational technology influenced the economy? • Informational Technology (IT) is the use of technology to move ideas from one place or person to another. • IT has changed the way people around the world do business. • Today, people can order almost anything they need online; about $3 trillion is spent online each year.
How has IT impacted North Carolina? • For example, in western North Carolina, craftspeople are selling the things they make on a Web site called the Mountain Area Information Network. • Computer networks connect many North Carolina companies. • This means lower cost for companies, which keeps prices down for customers.
Communication Hall of Fame Activity • Directoins: Use your Studies Weekly to gather information on the Communication Hall of Fame members. • Focus Question: How did your member contribute to the advancement of communication? • Hall of Fame Members: Samuel Morse, Alexander Graham Bell, Guglielmo Marconi, William Sydney Porter, and Luis Braille.
