Todmorden Curve The project involves: • Reinstatement of approx 300m of new track formation, ballast, sleepers and rail • 1nr new turnout from the Dn MVN2 and 1nr new crossover on the MVN2 line between Todmorden viaduct and Todmorden Station • Heavy maintenance of existing turnout and crossover on the FHR6 line • New signalling, telecoms and power equipment on and off the new chord and spacing alterations between Dobroyd and Summit Tunnel (late new scope) • Control modifications to Preston Powered Signal Box • Footbridge at Dobroyd Crossing (by National Footbridge Team)

Todmorden Curve Key Milestones • Contract Award (Buckinghams MAFA) Jul-13 • Mobilise to site Aug-13 • Installation of new S&C Nov-13 (disruptive access wk 31 and 32) • Heavy Maintenance (FHR6) Dec-13 (during Holme Tunnel disruptive access) • Commission Signals MVN2 Jan-14 (disruptive access wk 41 24hr) • Commission and Hand back Chord Feb-14 (disruptive access wk 45 50hr) Current Status • Site setup under way • Material deliveries over next 8 weeks – engineering train • Design underway • Survey and GI works in progress 6

  8. Holme Tunnel Repair Background • ELR: FHR6 Gannow Junction to Hall Royd Junction • Masonry & brick tunnel • Constructed between 1845 and 1849 • 265 yards (242 metres) long • Located near the village of Holme Chapel, Cliviger 8

Holme Tunnel Repair Defects • Severe distortion of tunnel bore at Todmorden end • Distortion of Todmorden portal • Brickwork defects along tunnel length Causes • Landslide movements • Seismic activity and faulting • Climate and rainfall • Streams and groundwater • Mining at Todmorden End • Excavations at landslide toe 9

Holme Tunnel Repair Solution • Undertake primary and secondary grouting prior to main works • Remove and replace signalling and tellecoms cables • Remove and replace 600m of Permanent Way • Replace existing masonry lining at Todmorden end with new concrete lining and strengthen invert. • Reconstruct Todmorden Portal • Repairs at Burnley end to brickwork lining • Install new 6ft drainage Remit • Reinstate structural integrity to allow return to normal asset management regime • Reinstate Standard Gauge Clearance • Removal of performance and line closure risk due to continued deterioration • Allow removal of 20mph PSR, and passive provision for 75mph line speed 10
