TheHistory of the City Silesia became part of thePolish state inthe 10th century. Throughtheagesitbelonged to the Czech, theAustrian, the German Empire, and finally back to Poland. Katowice was a littlevillageuntilthe 19th century, whenthe first coalmineswerebuilthere. For many yearsit was a German city, but peoplewholivedherefought to belong to Poland. After World War Ithreeuprisingstook place in Silesia, then the plebiscitewas organised and eventually Katowice became the capital of Silesian Voivodeshipin Poland. The city was occupied by Nazi Germany between 1939-1945.
