  1. Barriers to effective communication

  2. In the previous blog we saw about the effective communication and its importance where now let us have a clarification that how it hinders our communication. • It is known that very few are aware of communication skills. The ambiguity of communication misleads the way we transmute the message from one and another. Despite of all the wrong insights about communication, people feel that they are very efficient at communication and dispute that the reasons for the barriers are others’ problems.

  3. In order to lead a life in these embattled societies, we ought to be ready to overcome the barriers in communication. Classification of barriers: The major barriers that affect communication process are listed below. • Semantic barrier • Physical barrier • Organizational barrier • Emotional barrier

  4. Semantic barrier: • Linguistic ability would be hindrance to commute with others. Though we converse in the same language, the vocabulary being used in the message would obstruct the understanding by the receiver due to the unfamiliarity of those words. Physical barrier: • Environmental and natural conditions disturb the process of conversation. Geographical distance should also be considered. Communication will be at ease in shorter distance. Some technological interior work place and noise could also create problem in proper communication.

  5. Organizational barrier: • When there is a lack in the ability to communicate with the members of an organization that leads to the failure of that organization. At the same time if it is effectively conversed then there is only success in that organization. In many MNCs we can see culturally diverse audience and the usage of new technologies which had caused a demand for organizational communications. Moreover, poor management, behavior conflicts and lack of motivation will thwart the communication.

  6. Emotional barrier: Common road blocks of improper communication are pride, anger, anxiety and depression. Pride makes you concentrate on your own perspective rather than the benefits among the people involved in that communication. Anger affects the way of transforming the message you received which would deviate the way of communication. Anxiety hinders your concentration and has a chance to deviate from the effective communication. Depression isolates you from others and blocks your communication leading to cold feelings toward others.

  7. These barriers affect our day to day conversations and cause many conflicts among ourselves. To overcome this we need practical experience to gear up the skills necessary for effective communication and that would be discussed in my next blog.
