Calderdale: key info • 5 main townships • One of the smallest districts in England in terms of population, but one of the largest in terms of area. Over 4/5 area is described as rural by the national Census 2011 • It’s topography offers challenges: transport; access to services; flooding; and building homes etc • 209,800 people in Calderdale according to the ONS 2016 Mid-year population estimates. An increase of approximately 5,900 people since the 2011 Census

  5. Calderdale: key info Sexual Orientation Disability • 2011 Census - 491 people in a registered same-sex civil partnership across Calderdale (0.3% of the population). This does not include same-sex cohabiting couples which are not recorded by the Census • Ward level data shows a higher proportion registered in same-sex civil partnership in Calder (1.13%), Luddendenfoot (0.67%) and Todmorden (0.45%)

Population Growth 2014-2035 According to the ONS 2014 Sub national population projections Calderdale is expecting that the largest population growth between 2014 and 2024 will be amongst those aged 75 to 84 by an increase of 42% followed by the age group 85 and over which is predicted to increase by 30%.

  17. Local Plan’s New Housing Requirements Calderdale needs to build on average 840 new dwellings per annum between 2017/18 to 2031/32. This figure includes the under delivery of new housing in Calderdale from 2012 to 2016.

  18. Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA) 2015 The SHMA 2015 states that Calderdale has a delivery target of 527 new homes a year. This figure takes into account under delivery in previous years from 2010/11.

Calderdale: our response • The Local Plan is key • BUT – need a range of solutions, one size will never fit all in Calderdale • Building blocks: Calderdale/Together Investment Partnership; Calderdale Local Delivery Company; working with SME’s; working with larger house builders; enabling self-build; making best use of smaller sites; bringing empty homes back into use; bringing investment in for regeneration; supporting Registered Providers to build social housing; and working with Calder Valley Community Land Trust to deliver homes for the Calder Valley
