  3. L22 Under Bellringer Subject-Verb Agreement in special cases Inverted Sentences Verb still agrees with the subject EX: There (is, are) three bears in the story. Compound Subjects Joined by and usually takes plural verb EX: Penelope and Telemachus (was, were) tired of the suitors. Joined by and but make up a single unit  takes singular verb EX: Fish and chips (is, are) a popular meal in England.

L22 Under Bellringer Compound Subjects (continued) Joined by and but starts with many a, every, or each  takes a singulare verb EX: Each teacher and administrator (is trained, are trained) to perform CPR. Joined by or or nor takes verb that agrees with nearest subject EX: The club advisor or its members (provide, provides) a snack. EX: The members or the club advisor (provide, provides) a snack.

The soldiers and their commander (fight, fights) bravely. Many a doctor and lawyer (was helped, were helped) through college by receiving an academic scholarship. Both the dog and the cat (was, were) asleep. Every boy and girl (deserve, deserves) fudge. The cat or the flowers (is making, are making) me sneeze.
