  2. Who Is Jesus Talking About? • Sons of Hell • Greater Condemnation • Shut out of Kingdom • Blind, Fools • Dirty, Rotting Flesh/Bones • Serpents/Brood Vipers • Murderers, Persecutors

  3. Scribes & Pharisees • Scribes – teachers of law • Pharisees – religious sect • Superior Knowledge • “Sit in Moses seat” • Superior Action - Hard workers! • “travel land/sea” (23:15) • Fast, pray, tithe much/often (Lu. 18) • Highly respected rel. leaders • They thought they were right!

  4. Two Warnings • Superior religious knowledge and external religious action does not permit you to neglect your heart! (Matt. 22:37; 1 Cor 13:1-3; Rev. 2:4) • Identifying hypocrites in the church does not exempt you from obeyingthe Lord and belonging to his church! • “Observe and do” (23:3) Teaching adherence to G.Word is not phariseeism! • “These you ought to have done, without leaving the other undone” (23:23)

  5. Think About the Horror • The very Son of God is in their midst • They are condemning their Judge! • “assail him vehemently…cross examine…seeking to catch…accuse him” (Lu 11:53f) • They turn their nose up at God Himself! • “they derided him” (Luke 16:14) • Think they are better than sinless Jesus! • “By what authority…” (Matt. 21:23) • They even kill God’s Son! • “plotted to take Jesus by trickery and kill Him” (Matt. 26:4;John 11:53)

  6. How Does Hypocrisy Begin? • I don’t think anyone starts out saying “I want to be a hypocrite!” • A lot of hard & miserable work! • Hypocrisy is not a happy business • Key factors • Can’t see God, seeking approval from men based on external actions (Luke 16:15) • Start giving & withholding praise to others • Despising others/elevating self (Luke 18:9) • Forgetting that God knows the heart, begin justifying self, hypocrisy leaven spreads

  7. Hypocrisy Defined • “an actorunder an assumed character (stage player)...one who acts pretentiously, a counter-feit, a man who assumes and speaks or acts under a feigned character” • The true hypocrite won’t apply this lesson to himself (Prov. 12:15;17:10) • Don’t think about others, apply to self

  8. Hypocrisy Condemned • Woe 8 times • Hypocrites 7 times • Shut out of the kingdom! • You can fool others, and even yourself, but you can’t fool God • God knows your heart (Lu. 16:15) • God sees the heart (1 Sam. 16:7)

  9. Hypocrisy Identified • Focuses on outside to the neglect of the inside • Stresses minors to the neglect of majors • Practices religion to honor self in the sight of others

  10. Application • We have all failed in the past • Not done what we said • Missed the major for the minor • Worried about externals • Struggled to have the right heart • Refuse to let seeds of hypocrisy to grow in your heart • Jesus warns, “do not do according to their works” (23:3) • “Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy” (Lu. 12:1)

  11. Hypocrisy Defeated • I will follow my words with action (v.3; 1 John 3:18) • I will lovingly help rather than burden others (v.4; Gal. 6:10) • I seek the praise of God, not the praise of men (v.5; Gal. 1:10)

  12. Hypocrisy Defeated • I will not neglect weightier matters in pursuit of the minor (v.23; Luke 10:41) • I will cleanse from the inside out (v.25; Jas. 5:6-10) • I will truly listen to and obey God’s word (v.29-30)
