  1. Hydroclave The Medical Waste Solution The SIGN Meeting, New Delhi 29th August 2001 Supported by the W.H.O.

  2. Challenges we face today… As the world population grows, and cities turn into mega-cities, infectious disease control becomes critical. • Infectious diseases are traveling around the world as fast as an airplane can fly – and reach every corner of the globe. • Government Regulators world-wide are responding to the problem with stringent new • Environmental and Medical Waste Regulations.

  3. Prescription to comply with new regulations.. • Good waste segregation, to minimize Medical Waste volume. • Set up Centralized Treatment Facility , shared by a number of Hospitals, or: • Use in-house technology, which will turn Medical Waste into ordinary non-regulated municipal waste. • Select a non-incineration technology, which • Is easy and safe to operate • Has no harmful emissions • Sterilizes to a high level, at a low cost.

  4. Performance Guaranteed high level of sterilization, including wet waste, metals, liquids and sharps. Automatic operation, and not dependent on operator skill for sterility. No infectious or harmful emissions. Mechanical destruction of the waste, and safe for land-fill. Economic Low operating cost with low energy consumption. Low maintenance costs. No costly bags, filters or chemicals in the process. Very large weight and volume reduction of the waste. Cost-effective purchase price with leasing/finance options. Strong warranty. Why chooseHydroclaveTechnology?

  5. The Hydroclave Process – Stage oneMedical Waste is deposited in the Hydroclave vessel. The Hydroclave can process: • Bagged waste, in ordinary bags • Sharps containers • Liquid containers • Cardboard containers • Metal objects

  6. The Hydroclave Process – Stage twoThe waste fragmentation and sterilization • Powerful rotators mix the waste and breaks it into small pieces. • Steam fills the double wall (jacket) of the vessel and heats the vessel interior. • The liquids in the waste turn to steam. • After 20 minutes the waste and liquids are sterile.

  7. The Hydroclave Process – Stage threeVessel venting and dehydration • The vent is opened, and the vessel de-pressurizes. • Steam heat and mixing continue until all the liquids are evaporated and the waste is dry.

  8. The Hydroclave Process – Stage fourUnloading the Waste • The unloading door is opened. • The mixer now rotates in the opposite direction, so angled blades on the mixer can push the waste out the unloading door. • The dry, sterile waste can be fine-shredded further or dropped in a waste disposal bin. The waste is now ready for safe disposal!

  9. The Hydroclave Result:Waste sterility of 6log10 guaranteed! • Dry waste, regardless of its original water content. • Low odor, due to the dryness. • Volume reduction to 85% • Weight reduction to 70% • Accepted as harmless waste.

  10. STERILIZATION OF NEEDLES & SHARPS • The Hydroclave achieves a high degree of sterility due to a vigorous mixing and fragmenting of the waste inside the hot vessel: • it breaks apart the sharps container … • sets free the sharps into the vessel … • where they are thoroughly exposed to the required temperature and pressure. • If for any reason temperature and pressure parameters are not met, the Hydroclave automatically resets and initiates a repeat sterilization cycle. • It is IMPOSSIBLE for a needle or sharp to be shielded from the temperature as there are no “cold spots”, assuring total sterility. • No bacterial growth was recorded on needles during tests conducted at the Kingston General Hospital.

  11. Questionsand Answers….. QHow does the Hydroclave achieve the high sterility? By a vigorous mixing and fragmenting of the waste inside the hot vessel. Q How does the Hydroclave make the waste very dry? By applying dry heat from the jacket to the waste, instead of injecting hot, wet steam into the waste. Q Is the Hydroclave approved for use? The Hydroclave is a steam sterilization technology, and accepted by authorities around the world. The CPCB called it “superior” Q Why is the Hydroclave inexpensive to operate? The steam is not lost – it is returned back to the boiler in the form of clean, hot water, ready for re-use. Q Is the Hydroclave a proven technology? Yes, it had been independently tested, and operating for years in North America, and around the world. Q Is there a Hydroclave Model to suit my needs? Most likely, because Hydroclave manufactures seven different sizes.

  12. Hydroclave No pre-shredding of infectious waste High level of sterility, to 8 log 10 Low operating cost (by steam) Microwave(non-pressure type) Must pre-shred No sterility, only “disinfection” High operating cost (expensive electricity) How does Hydroclave compare?

  13. Hydroclave Low operating cost by recycling steam. No special bags required Treats wet or liquid loads easily Strong weight reduction Strong volume reduction Consistent high sterility Autoclave Higher operating cost, no steam recycling High temp. bags req’d Cannot treat wet or liquid loads Weight increase No volume reduction Spotty sterility How does Hydroclave compare?

  14. Proven Performanceat Tata Memorial Hospital When installed Sept./99 As it looks today, 2001 This unit ran 2,200 cycles, has treated 88,000 Kg of medical waste, and never failed a sterility test on any cycle. Downtime was less than 1%, and maintenance cost minimal

  15. Typical Hydroclave Centralized Facility Enviromed Inc. in Canada collects waste from many Hospitals and operates The Hydroclave H-100

  16. Recent Hydroclave Projects: Dysa Tratamientos Ecologicos, Mexico Waste was piled high trying to process same in a small, unsuitable microwave Dysa replaced the microwave with an H-25 Hydroclave, which processes 2,000 Kg per day at their plant. Dysa has bought their third Hydroclave, the latest one, the H-15, built in India.

  17. Recent Hydroclave Projects Vancouver, Canada. Hydroclave won a major competition to supply The City of Vancouver with a Medical Waste Treatment Center. The City’s decision was based on the environmental, technical and economic superiority of the Hydroclave. Two Hydroclave H-100 Systems will treat all the City’s Medical Waste.

  18. Latest Hydroclave ProductMade in Indiaby Hydroclave (India) Pvt Ltd. The Model H-15. EXPORTED to Mexico City, Feb 2001

  19. How Hydroclave can help: • Prepare your waste profile analysis including waste volume and waste classifications. • Provide you with a cost/benefit analysis of installing the appropriate Hydroclave Model. • Supply a turn-key, fully operational Waste Treatment System with operating/maintenance training.
