RTI RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION
Jenkins Independent Schools Project Director: Sherry Wright ISSP Grant Cadre Members: Beth Dorsey Hannah Harrison
Development IDEA was rewritten and signed into law in December of 2004 One aspect of the reauthorization was the concept of a pre-identification strategy called “RTI: Response to Intervention.”
The What • The practice of providing high quality instruction and interventions matched to student need, monitoring progress frequently to make changes in instruction, and applying child response data to important educational decisions.
Truths • Believe that we can effectively teach all children • Intervene early • Use a multi-tier model of service delivery • Use a problem-solving method • Use research-based, scientifically validated interventions/instruction • Monitor student progress to inform instruction • Use data to make decisions • Use assessments for three different purposes • Address the needs of struggling and advanced learners
RESPONSE TO INTERVENTION TIER 3 TIER 2 TIER 1
Pyramid of Intervention TIER 3 TIER 2 TIER 1
TIER I • 80% of students will be successful • Research based and High Quality • On-Going Assessments
TIER I • Program of Studies • Core Content for Assessment • Performance Level Descriptions • CATS data (KCCT, writing portfolio, EPAS) • Differentiated instruction • Formative assessment strategies • Collaboration of educators, parents, community • Individual Learning Plans • Vision and Hearing Screening • School-based behavior programs
TIER II • 15% of students will be successful • For students who have not responded successfully to tier one interventions
TIER II • Screening tools • Additional instructional resources • Cooperative grouping • Support of instructional coach • G/T specialists • Literacy/Math specialists • Individualized behavior system • Extended School Services
Tier III • 5% of students will be successful • Intensive instruction for the small percentage of students who have not responded to tier I and tier II interventions. • Individualized to meet student needs
Tier III • One-to-one instruction with a highly qualified and effective teacher • Progress monitor 2+ times per week • Intensive reading and mathematics instruction

COMPONENTS OF INTERVENTION SYSTEMS • Universal Screening • Progress Monitoring • Tiered Service Delivery • Core Instruction • Supplemental Instruction • Intensive Instruction • Data-based Decision Making • Parent Involvement • Fidelity of Implementation • Professional Development
Steps of Problem Solving 1. Problem Identification What is the discrepancy between what is expected and what is occurring? 2. Problem Analysis Why is the problem occurring? 5. Plan Evaluation Is the intervention plan effective? 3. Plan Development What is the goal? What is the intervention plan to address this goal? How will progress be monitored? 4. Plan Implementation How will implementation integrity be ensured?
Goals for Next Year • Content Area/Grade Level Teams • Scheduling: 8 period day • Universal Screener • STEEP/PASS Screener • Curriculum-engaging lessons/differentiated instruction • Carnegie Learning Software: Cognitive Tutoring/Supplemental Material • Progress Monitoring • Supplemental/Intensive Instruction • ESS: Studyisland/A + Learning/ ALEKS • Professional Development: Teaching the Teacher • Parent Communication-email/letters home/phone calls
