  2. Office of Personal and Career Development Located in Reynolda Hall, Room 230 In 2009 President Nathan Hatch envisioned a campus culture in which personal and career development would be a mission-critical component of the undergraduate student experience President Hatch appointed Andy Chan as the Vice President for Personal & Career Development Vice President Chan created the Office of Personal and Career Development

  3. Map of Office Office Space Marketing Team Innovation Station Admin VP Chan ESE Minor Career Coaches

  4. Goal, Mission and Philosophy Motto Team work makes the dream work! Mission To teach and equip all Wake Forest Students to navigate the path from college to career with clarity, competence and confidence.

  5. Who is the key customer? Key Customer: all Wake students No matter your year in school, OPCD has something to offer you. 1st Year: register for Deacon Source, find what you are interested, choose major and think about various career directions, build a strong resume 2nd Year: search for internships, research abroad experience, gather career information, 3rd Year: study abroad, narrow career direction, search for internships, investigate graduate school 4th Year: choose career direction, apply for jobs, plan for post graduation, reach out through LinkedIn

  6. Atmosphere/Physical Layout The atmosphere was open, relaxed, and social Physical Layout: when you first walked in there was a front desk with a sitting area. Within this space, there were three career counseling offices. Through the right hallway there was personal career development and mentoring resources and through the left hallway there was the marketing team and the entrepreneurship office. Andy Chan’s office, the department head, is located in a separate building. The open design facilitates a teamwork atmosphere where it is easy to collaborate and build off one another. However, it is interesting to note that the previous setup was even more open and they had to adjust the layout. Before re-designing the space, it was hard for people to get their work accomplished because people constantly talked or asked for feedback.

  7. How do people in the office interact? The people in the office interact in a friendly, yet professional manner Walking into the office, people would greet one another before settling in. The interactions we witnessed were more casual than what I had imaged for a business office. Interactions involved questions regarding work but also varied i.e. the upcoming football game or the previous night’s news

  8. How are People Dressed? The marketing team usually dresses in business casual They dress more formal if there is a special event, or group meeting. Their office has a very relaxed environment.

  9. Who are the key “go-to” people? Director/Vice President: Andy Chan There are several assistant directors in different areas: Career and professional development Employer relations Marketing and communications Center for creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship Mentoring resource center Leadership development Committee of 4-5 people make decisions for the whole group

  10. Typical Hours Worked: Monday-Friday: 8:30-5:30 Office hours are open until 5:00

  11. Project Management Projects are completed by teams Even individual assignments become teamwork due to collaboration across departments Because so many departments are housed in one office, they often work together There motto is “teamwork makes the dream work!”

  12. Final Questions What do senior members of this office wish new members understood or did when they are hired? • You are allowed to ask questions, get to know people, and be curious What is the most important advice or learning the Fellow has gained as a member of the office? Is there something they wish they had understood earlier about office culture? • Be intentional, selfish and proactive • Be yourself, they hire who they think you are
