  1. Comp 4P11/03/08 Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend. Please put you Fast Food materials in order and turn them in.

  2. Juvenile Justice • In this country you are considered an adult when you reach age 18 • In California, when you are under 18 and you commit a crime your case is generally handled by the juvenile court system • The juvenile system has different punishments and sentences than an adult court, they are usually more lenient and focus more on rehabilitation rather than punishment

  3. Juvenile Justice • If a child were found guilty of homicide and sentenced in the California juvenile system, the maximum punishment would be imprisonment with the California Youth Authority until age 25 • If a child were tried as an adult for the same crime, they could receive a life sentence

  4. Juvenile Justice Activity 1 • You will be divided into a “jury” of 6. Your jury must decide whether or not to try your juvenile offender as an adult. • You must come to a consensus as a group. • Be ready to report back to the class what you discussed and what you decided.

  5. Juvenile Justice Activity 1 • When you have made a decision, get out a piece of paper (each person should have their own). • Label your paper Juvenile Justice–Activity 1. • Explain who your juvenile offender is, what he did, and whether your group decided to try him as an adult and why. Be sure to mention the factors that influenced your decision such as age, nature of the crime, etc. • If you think your offender should be tried as an adult, should they be eligible to receive the death penalty?

  6. Juvenile Justice Activity 2 • Capital Murder: The unlawful killing of another human being without justification or excuse • Malice aforethought: The predetermination to commit an act without legal justification or excuse. A malicious design to injure. An intent, at the time of killing, willfully to take the life of a human being, or an intent willfully to act in callous and wanton disregard of the consequences to human life. Does not necessarily imply any ill will, spite or hatred towards the individual killed.
