  2. Cuando la Tabla Periódica se examina con detenimiento se observa una gran variedad de nombres y orígenes muy diversos.

  3. Nombres de: • Científicos ilustres • Cuerpos celestes • Geográficos • Minerales • Metales • Mitológicos • Sugeridos por la IUPAC • Supersticiones.

  4. Nombres de lugares y similares: Magnesio (Mg): de Magnesia, comarca de Tesalia (Grecia). Scandio (Sc)Scandia, Escandinavia Vanadio (V): Vanadis, diosa escandinava). Cobre (Cu): cuprum, de la isla de Chipre. Galio (Ga): de Gallia, Francia.

  5. Germanio(Ge): de Germania, Alemania. Selenio (Se):de Selene, la Luna. Estroncio (Sr): Strontian, ciudad de Escocia. Polonio (Po): de Polonia, en honor de Marie Curie (polaca) codescubridora del elemento junto con su marido Pierre.

  6. Nombres de elementos en honor a planetas y asteroides: Mercurio (Hg): plata acuática (en griego hydrárgyros) hydra=agua, gyros= plata Uranio (U): del planeta Urano. Neptunio (Np): del planeta Neptuno Plutonio (Pu): del planeta Plutón. Cerio (Ce): por el asteroide Ceres Titanio(Ti): de los Titanes, los primeros hijos de la Tierra según la mitología griega.

Oro (Au): de aurum, aurora resplandeciente.Talio (Tl): del griego thallos, vástago o retoño verde.Bismuto (Bi): del alemán weisse masse, masa blanca.Astato (At): del griego astatos, inestable.Radón (Rn): radium emanation (radiactiva). (De  noble nada de nada, es radioactivo).Radio (Ra): del latín radius, rayo.Tungsteno, de tung sten, del sueco, piedra pesada.Bario (Ba): del griego barys, pesado. Nombres que hacen referencia a propiedades:

  8. Nombres de científicos: Bohrio, Bh (107): en honor de Niels Bohr, físico danés Curio, Cm (96): en honor de MarieCurie, física polaca y Pierre Curie, físico francés Einstenio, Es (99): en honor de Albert Einstein, físico alemán

  9. Mendelevio, Md (101): en honor de D. I. Mendeléiev, químico ruso (1834-1907) Ruterfordio, Rf (104): en honor de Ernest Rutherford, físico inglés (1871-1937) Seaborgio, Sg (106): en honor de Glen Seaborg, químico estadounidense

  10. Otros: Sodio (Na): Del latín sodanum (sosa),  Na del latín natrium (nitrato de sodio).Fósforo (P) de phosphoros, portador de luz (el fosforo emite luz en la obscuridad porque arde al combinarse lentamente con el oxígeno del aire). Azufre (S) del latín sulphurium. Potasio (K)kalium; el nombre, del inglés pot ashes (cenizas). (Las cenizas de algunas plantas son ricas en potasio).

  11. Hierro (Fe): de ferrum.Kriptón (Kr): del  griego kryptos, oculto, secreto.Plata (Ag): del latín argentum.Estaño (Sn): del latín stannum. Antimonio (Sb): de antimonium; Sb de stibium. Plomo (Pb): del latín plumbum.
