  2. EPOC stands for Excess Post-exercise Oxygen Consumption, and essentially describes the attempt for your body to replenish itself of oxygen after sustained exercise, generally cardiovascular. It’s more colloquially known as the afterburn, and you can feel it whenever you finish a run or a session of HIIT. You stop exercising, you sit down or start stretching, but you are still panting even though you aren’t doing anything. That is EPOC. Because your muscles are depleted of oxygen, your body keeps working to return to a normal, resting state.

  3. Oxygen is needed to do that, so you continue to breathe hard for a limited amount of time. However, EPOC and the effects of intense exercise can last much longer than you’d realize. After working out, your metabolic rate is increased and drops as time goes on. Studies have shown that the effects of exercise stick with you up to thirty-eight hours after the workout was completed. Now, your metabolic rate isn’t going to be as high as it was during exercise, and you certainly won’t be panting for that whole time, but the effects will be there nonetheless.
