Role of Women in PT. Newmont, NTT Introduction : • NTT in general : • A province near Papua, in the eastern part of Indonesia (specific : south western part of Sumbawa, NTT) • Many small island • Scarcely populated area • Main jobs : animal breeding such as cows, horses, fishery • Product : cocoa, coffee, rice
2. PT. Newmont NTT • A mining company • A joint venture of :  Newmont Indonesia Limited (USA) 40% share  NTT mining corporation (Japan) 35% share  PT. Palenafu Indah Indonesia 20 % share, etc.
Activities : • Community Developments - A form of responsibility of the company to the people surrounding mining area - Fractions:  Giving trainings about sewing, micro craft and skill training  Program of people’s health  Reposition about agricultural activity covering agriculture technique, marketing network and pass control  Development of education  to improve the formal and non formal education  Development of facilities and infrastructure with support Activities, economy, education and health
Implementation is done by Yogyakarta Olat Parigi (YOP) • Push to open new jobs for people there • Donation : in the form Of micro business credit (Rp.500.000/person)
Problems : • Not all people get direct benefit, so some of them be come unemployed • Since Benete Bay become harbors  many fishermen loosing their job • Some women get benefit, some lose their job • Women :  farmers, animal breeders and fishermen lose their job  impact on women too
Conclusion : • Women have opportunity to get a job  Low position • Women’s role must be increased • Coordination among government, private organizations, colleges and women organization
