  9. Student Life • Housing • Freshmen are required to live on campus in one of the eight houses. • Most upperclassmen elect to stay in their house. • There is no grade-specific housing

  10. Sports Caltech has several intercollegiate sports, all NCAA Division III, and many club and inter-house sports.

Traditions “Ditch Day” • Initiated in the 1920s • Seniors select one day every year to ditch school. • Freshmen attempt to get into seniors’ dorms while they are gone, to “modify” seniors’ rooms. • For example: • Room filled with Styrofoam • Furniture glued to the ceiling • Room converted into beach

  12. Pranks • Caltech has a long-standing rivalry with MIT. In 2005 Caltech students visited MIT. While there, they handed out free tee-shirts with MIT printed on the front. But when they opened it up, they discovered that on the back it said…

  13. One year later… In retribution, students from MIT went to Caltech and “borrowed” the 130-year-old, 1.7 ton cannon that is fired every year at Caltech graduations.

  16. Remember, if you want to be a doctor, a lawyer, or an artist…. Don’t go to Caltech. But if you want to be a rocket scientist, the California Institute of Technology is the place for you.
