NEWPIN originated in South London, UK in 1982: To facilitate long term changes in the emotional well being of families To build self esteem, self awareness and secure attachments To break down intergenerational destructive patterns of behaviour To prevent child abuse and to intervene as early as possible in the life of a child

Newpin has been in Australia since 1998 NSW has three centres for mothers and children and one for fathers and their children On 1st August 2012 parents attending Newpin in Western Sydney had a total of 85 children in Out-of-Home care Newpin centres also exist in Victoria, Tasmania, WA and the ACT Components of the model are being run in a prison setting andwithin a home visiting program

  4. Target Group Mothers or fathers with a pre-school age child in care, who are working towards reunification and ……. who are open to exploring how their own childhood adversity has impacted negatively upon their parenting capacity

  5. The impact of childhood trauma and abuse means that many parents who come to Newpin with children in care face multiple and complex issues, including: • Mental ill health • A history of drug and/or alcohol misuse • Family violence • Insecure attachments • Compromised emotional development

  6. What Makes Newpin Different • The setting • Emotional rather than practical support • Formal and informal therapeutic group work • Joint work with parents and their children • The length of involvement in the program • The centre as a secure base
