Current Events (Set 1) 1. “Statue of Abolitionist Leader and Former Slave Frederick Douglass Moves to U.S. Capitol Building.” Seven foot bronze statue and gift of the District of Columbia dedicated in Capitol’s Emancipation Hall. Statue becomes the 4th out of 180 in the Capitol to honor an African American
Current Event #2 2. “High Holy Days Mark Jewish New Year Celebration of Rosh Hashanah that Ends with Yom Kippur.” Days of Awe include Days of Judgment and Atonement: the anniversary of creation and sin. Tashlich First two days of the 7thmonth of the Hebrew calendar Stones are thrown into water to cast away sins “Head of the Year” - The sounding of the horn (shofar) is a call for repentance (atonement)
Current Events #3 3. “Mesoamerican Discovery: Giant Maya Pyramid Carvings Found in City of Holmul in Guatemala.” 26’ stucco frieze depicts human figures (deified rulers) in mythological setting with hieroglyph inscriptions. Archaeologists made discovery while excavating a tunnel left open by looters / tomb raiders
Current Events #4 4. “Medieval Vampire Cemetery Found in Poland with 17 Skeletons From 15th-16th Century.” Skulls were severed and placed between knees or hands to stop them from rising from the dead. Construction workers building a road found buried bodies interred near Medieval gallows (execution) site

Why Study History? “History isn’t just about the past – settling old scores. It’s about the present and who we are.” - Ken Burns What do you think the author meant by this statement? We can’t change or fix the past or just worry about repeating mistakes. We are also making new history today and determining what makes history in the future.
